The Agricultural Turn in Northeast
10 Dec 2014

What also transpired at the interactive meeting in Nalbari district was the urgency to address, enquire, discuss, and contemplate the future of the small farmers who had gathered there. Numerous questions that the audience put up for Shiva ranged from the international conventions on national policies on agriculture, to small land holdings. Questions about sustainability, livelihoods, and the dilemma of the subsistence farmer – especially for those who had transitioned to use pesticides, about reverting back to organic farming – were addressed to the visiting guest. As small and marginal farmers at the meeting discussed the grand projects of the state, the everyday realities of the subsistence farmers and their encounters with the state became more tangible to visitors who were there as invitees.
